Orthodox Man Pleads Not Guilty In Shul Assault

London, UK -- An Orthodox man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in a Shul bathroom.

The 24 year-old defendant from Golders Green, North-West London, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday and will face trial in January 2009, accused of four offences relating to the incident which is alleged to have occured about four years ago.

The victim had left his family home on the day of the alleged incident to buy milk for his mother in nearby Stamford Hill. Prosecutors say the boy was approached in the street by the defendant, who asked him to show him where a particular Shul was. Once there, the accused allegedly dragged the boy into the bathroom where the victim says the attack took place.
Currently, the accused is out on bail.

The accused's lawyer recently persuaded Judge David Radford to change his bail conditions which prohibited him from entering any Shul. Judge Radford agreed that he can now attend the Biala Shtibel in Clapton as long as he is with one of eight chaperones, who are all officially Rabbim and members of the community.

Crown, Heights NY - Hearing of 770 Gabboim appeal against Aguch

The appeal presented by the Gabboim (Meschichist) of 770 against the ruling of Judge Ira Harkavy that Aguch (Krinsky) are the sole owners and determine policy in 770 was heard Tuesday in court by a panel of four judges.

Lawyers for both sides presented their arguments and claims and the judges drilled both sides very thoroughly.

In a very unusual move Judge Harkavy who issued the verdict on the case before the appeal was also in court as a spectator. This raised many eyebrows since a judge that presided over a hearing that is being appealed never attends the appeal of his own verdict. However, Judge Harkavy had retired after this verdict and decided to be an "observer" in the case.

After the hearing a member of one of the sies asked Harkavy what was his impression of yesterday's hearing. He replied "I cannot express an opinion but I can only say that both sides presented their case very clearly and the court will have to rule and determine this case.
Both sides were told that the final verdict could take 5 weeks up to a year.

Yom Kippur Message from President Bush

Yom Kippur, 5769

For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the L-RD. Leviticus 16:30

Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement and the most holy day in the Jewish faith. From the time the Kol Nidre is recited until the Shofar is sounded, Jews around the world will draw nearer to G-d through acts of atonement, fasting, and prayer. Jewish tradition teaches that on Yom Kippur, G-d remembers every name, listens to every petition, and offers forgiveness to the repentant.

On this day, Americans are reminded of the great blessings of religious freedom and the unalienable rights bestowed upon all people by the Creator of life. May G-d grant us peace, comfort, and hope for all the challenges we may face in the year ahead.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a blessed day and a most meaningful fast.

PCS Focusing On Frum Community in Current Economic Crisis

As director of placement at the New York office of Professional Career Services (PCS) – Agudath Israel of America’s job network – Moshe Tyberg knows how strong an impact the economic downturn has on the Orthodox Jewish community. Even before the Wall Street meltdown, many families were hurting as result of the economic slide of the last eighteen months. The recent collapse of several financial giants exacerbates a crisis situation.

While his office has placed many people in well-paying positions, says Mr. Tyberg, there are countless more who are desperately seeking employment. “The bottom line is that growing numbers of reliable, qualified heads of household who are out-of-work through no fault of their own are turning to PCS for help – and we don’t have enough jobs to suggest. It is imperative that people let us know about available positions.”

To further that objective, a number of Agudah activists launched an emergency campaign to raise awareness regarding the current unemployment situation and urging members of the community to take a proactive stance in identifying job openings and contacting PCS with the pertinent information. Yet another aspect of the campaign calls for volunteers to act as mentors who can assist job-seekers with resume writing and job interview preparation.

Maimonides Expands Fleet of Emergency Department Vehicles Thanks to Generosity of Brooklyn Resident

Maimonides Medical Center recently received a generous gift from local resident Mary Carpentieri who donated a stunning new ambulance to the Maimonides Emergency Department in memory of her husband, Louis A. Carpentieri.

According to Dr. Davidson, the ambulance is equipped with state-of-the-art features such as built-in satellite GPS with turn-by-turn navigation, and an advanced system to receive calls from fire and police dispatch. Back-up sensors will alert the driver when the ambulance is getting too close to an obstacle, and a rearview camera will further enhance the safety of the vehicle.

“The features of this ambulance will allow our paramedics to safely respond to critical situations in less time,” said Dr. Davidson. “And every minute saved can improve a patient’s chances of recovery.”

Lakewood Rabbonim Warn Of Potential Problems With Israeli Esrogim

Senior Rabbonim affiliated with Lakewood's Beis Medrash Gavoha have come out with a warning regarding the potential pitfalls of purchasing an Esrog from Israel for this post-Shmitta Succos

Because one is not allowed to profit from Israeli produce grown during the Shmita year, the only permissible way of selling an Israeli Esrog this year is via an "Otzer Beis Din". This means that the sale of the Esrog is done under the auspices of a Beis Din, and that the seller essentially acts as an agent who can charge only for the "Tircha", the work involved in getting the Esrog to the consumer; The seller may not charge for the Esrog itself.

In general, many are choosing to stay away from the Israeli Esrogim this year, instead purchasing Esrogim from such places as Yemen, Morroco, California, and Arizona.

NY Times Letter: Jerusalem and History

The following is a letter to the editor written to the New York Times by Rabbi Avi Shafran of Agudath Israel of America that appears in today's edition. The letter was in response to a New York Times article which can be read here

To the Editor:Re “As Holy Days Mix in Old City, So Do Wary Jews and Muslims” (Jerusalem Journal, front page, Sept. 29):Some Muslims indeed “defy archaeology and history” by denying the centrality to Judaism of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. But I question whatever notion of journalistic fairness led to your assertion that “the same problem exists on the other side as well.”Yes, believing Jews consider the Temple Mount and Jerusalem to have been divinely deeded them. But Muslims are free to live and worship in Jerusalem, unlike Jews or Christians in Mecca or Medina. And the Jewish claim to Jerusalem is in accordance with, not in defiance of, archaeology and history.
