Assad Remains Loyal to Hizbullah

In an interview with French television, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad stated that he will continue to support Hizbullah, stating he will only recognize Israel following a peace agreement with Jerusalem should such a deal be reached. Assad stated democracy is “not a goal” that he seeks.
The Syrian leader made his comments after hosting French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Damascus.

He spoke of “interests,” stating that he attempts to have other countries to express their interests and from there, it can be determined if the interests of two nations coincide.

He stated his position regarding “occupation in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine” is clear and the position will not change until such time the “occupation comes to an end.”

The Syrian leader also stated he does not view peace as a realistic possibility with Israel prior to American involvement in talks. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced late Thursday that a fifth round of mediated talks between Israel and Syria will convene in about two weeks in Istanbul.
