R' Menachem Genack Clarifies OU Position Regarding Agriprocessors

In a recent interview given to the Yated Ne'eman newspaper, R’ Menachem Genack, addressed the various reports that have been circulating regarding the OU’s position on the Agriprocessors debacle. “Many of the charges written in the papers - especially the more lurid ones - are almost certainly untrue,” he said, warning people not to believe everything they read. In regard to reports that the OU is withdrawing Kashrus supervision from the plant unless new management is hired, R’ Genack clarified that “the end result of the OU’s action is meant not to pull our supervision from Agriprocessors, but that Agriprocessors should have a new management team in place to confront all of the issues and to make sure they are moving ahead.

Regarding rumors that the OU is insisting that Agriprocessors unionize, he said “We have no position on the matter. What we suggested was a dialogue. “Our goal is to make sure that people have a favorable view of what’s happening there and Shechita in general,” R' Genack said.
“We have a responsibility to our community to make sure that people view us - not the OU, but the Orthodox Jewish community - as the caring, responsible people we in fact are.”
