The newspaper Der Spiegel reports that German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeyer is the new candidate for the upcoming elections for the chancellor of Germany, representing the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Mr. Steinmeyer has been a close friend of Berlin shliach Rabbi Yehuda Tiechtel for many years. Last year, he attended the grand opening of Chabad’s new community center in the Germany capital, where he gave an enthusiastic speech about the work of the shluchim in Germany. “There is nothing like the activities of Chabad anywhere in the world,” he said at the time.
